Some Rainbow Trout were brought into the DNR Pathology lab today by an angler. The man caught 10 fish and 7 of them had several (5 - 10) puncture wounds. They looked like they were from a bird except the holes were on the back, side and belly of the fish instead of just on the back. It is a mystery because the holes are so small, about the size of a pencil, and the fish were so big (~10 inches), too big for a tern or something to go after. The holes were fresh and the angler saw the fish feeding near the surface, so probably some kind of bird tried to skewer them, but no one can imagine what bird. Kingfishers? Loons? Terns? We are looking for a publication that shows the various puncture wounds from birds.
