The parties keep rolling in - and the guys at Fool's Gold have all the hookups for an awesome New Year's Eve. If you're in LA, obviously you have to ring in the new year at HARD NYE (which we have mentioned before) where A-Trak will be spinning alongside Justice and 2 Live Crew. Meanwhile in San Francisco, Fool's' main man Nick Catchdubs will be holding down the Temple with Diplo, and if you're north of the border, Jokers of the Scene will be partying in Montreal at SAT with Guns 'n' Bombs, Curses! And Crystal Castles, while in Toronto, Flosstradamus will be DJ-ing The Social. Until Apple invent a portable teleportation device for Macbooks, you'll have to choose between just one of these shindigs, but looks like they'll each be amazing in their own way.
The 1960 film, La Nave de los Monstruos (AKA: Ship of Monsters), has pretty much everything a Mexican scifi/horror/kiddie film should have: the ultra-hot Lorena Velazquez playing a bloodsucking babe from Venus, a Martian with a giant, pulsating rubber brain, a Cyclops named Ook, a really lame talking skeleton puppet, and their fabulously cheesy robot, Tor, who in this touching scene at the movie's finale, flies back into outer space in his rocket ship while crooning a romantic duet with his newfound love, a cantina jukebox!
Okay, I think I have seen it all. Too late to get this for the Holiday season for that Marketer that has everything, but Archie McPhee is selling a Seth Godin action figure (this is real). I[base ']m sure they'll go fast, so stand in line now.
[Now it make sense why Seth recently got glasses. He doesn't want his super hero status compromised...ala Superman and Clark Kent].
This was our first family Christmas and it was real fun. Last year Logan was too young, but this time we had the tree and decorations, we had a nice catered dinner (I had so much to eat!) and then we opened presents. Mostly we watched Logan open his presents, he was obviously at the center of the attention. Here are some photos:
Questo e[base '] stato il primo Natale in famiglia. L[base ']anno scorso Logan era troppo piccolo, quindi non abbiamo festeggiato. Questa volta invece abbiamo albero e decorazioni, cena abbondante con famiglia, ed infine i regali. Soprattutto i regali per Logan, ci siamo seduti in un circolo a guardare Logan aprire i suoi regali. Ecco alcune foto:
I hope you all had a nice Christmas too, Happy Holidays!!
Spero che anche voi abbiate avuto un felice Natale. Tanti auguri a tutti!!

There are many different cinematic incarnations of Charles Dickens' 1843 classic holiday tale A Christmas Carol. It seems as if there are as many different versions, variations, and spoofs of this story as there are of Dracula and Frankenstein. One of the more memorable retellings of Dickens' masterpiece is the 1984 made-for-television version, directed by Clive Donner and starring George C. Scott. While the direction of the film is fairly pedestrian, the overwhelming performance of George C. Scott vaults it to a marvelous level.
Well according to a XXL Magazine report, Jay-z has stepped down as Def Jam's President. Joe Buddens,Cam'ron, Method Man, LL Cool J and a zillion other New York artists have been clamoring for this resignation for sometime. According to XXL, Jay-z will stay on Def Jam subsidary Roc-a-Fella Records as a recording artist.
"I
produce enough for myself and the people around me and that is why I
consider myself to be self-sufficient;" claimed Simpleking confidently.
"hmmm," pondered the Grumble, "but doesn't self-sufficiency mean that you produce enough just for yourself?"
"In a narrow sense yes, but that selfish form of self-sufficiency
is unsound economically. Sooner or later, if you don't consider what is
around you, your self-based self-sufficiency will become a center of
weakness rather than one of strength." Said Simpleking and then added
to clarify; "self-sufficiency should include both the Self and the
Extended Self."
"And what is this Extended Self?" asked the Grumble, like he didnt know.
"That's for you to decide." Said Mr Simpleking, as if it was the only reply that could possibly make any sense.
With that, the Grumble sat back in his chair and looked up to a
star hanging from his ceiling. This was the cue that meant that the
meeting was over and that Simpleking will leave now to work on his new
assignment. His, was a very hard job. No one ever gave him clear
instructions or offered any form of help. Simpleking simply had to find
the mission by himself, with the help of a few hints, that he may or
may not find. After that, he has to find a solution and to execute it
in the most optimal manner. When all is done, he doesnt get a Bonus, or
a Reward, a Badge or even a Lollipop; just Mr Grumble's absent-minded
loss inside a star in the ceiling and that is just enough to make
Simpleking's missions worth all the frustrations and sacrifices that
come with them.

In heated anticipation for So Haunted, Cut Copy[base ']s second album, Modular and the band have put together an hour-long disco mix, just to whet our appetites for the Australian trio[base ']s disco rock return. Of course, being the kind souls that we are, we have the mix to give away right here. It[base ']s a monster playlist that will keep you dancing over the holiday break, featuring such groove masterminds as Space and Holy Ghost!. The mix is called So Cosmic and you can download it below. Enjoy.
In Washington today, two members of Congress from Washington State, Reps. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Dave Reichert (R-Wash.) introduced the "Media Ownership Act of 2007" (H.R.4835) - the House companion to a Senate bill (S. 2332) sponsored by Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Trent Lott (R-Miss.). This bill would overturn the Federal Communications Commission's vote yesterday to further consolidate the media, as well as set new standards for the FCC to be more responsive to public input on their decisions.
In a 3-to-2, party-line vote, the FCC eliminated the longstanding ban on "newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership," which prohibits a local newspaper from owning a broadcast station in the same market. The "Media Ownership Act of 2007" would prevent the FCC's hurried rule from becoming law by requiring more time for public comment and changing the timeframe for proposed revisions to be published. It would also go into effect retroactively, back to October 1, 2007.
Jon Bartholomew, Media Reform Campaign Coordinator for Common Cause, issued the following statement:
"The media is the public's source of information for the democratic process. The last thing the American public needs is for this information to come from fewer sources, which is what the FCC's decision yesterday will lead to. We are very pleased to hear that the House is coming together to do what is right for the American public and block further media consolidation." "We are particularly pleased that this legislation would require the FCC to be more responsive to public input by requiring more time for public comment on any proposed new rules. The process the FCC uses for their decision-making needs to be reformed, and this legislation takes the first step towards that goal."
When we first meet Texas congressman Charlie Wilson, he's naked in a Las Vegas hot tub full of coke-sniffing strippers and Playmates. But when he sees Dan Rather in a turban reporting from Afghanistan, he perks up and asks the bartender to turn up the TV.
So I heard about a young startup called Animoto that automatically creates music videos from photos and MP3s, and I finally got around to giving it a shot. I was really surprised...this is simply very cool! The video above took literally less than five minutes to create. I took some of our highlight shots from our various Grooveeffect Galleries, uploaded a mix I put together for our MySpace page, and Animoto created this video for me...effects and all were done automatically.
From Animoto's "About Us" page...
Animoto Productions is a bunch of techies and film/tv producers who decided to lock themselves in a room together and nerd out.
Their first release is Animoto, a web application that automatically generates profession ... READ MORE >>

Smashing Pumpkins have recorded an acoustic EP and will be releasing it just in time for after the holidays, January 2 via iTunes in fact. All four of the EP's tracks were recorded at Pass Studio in Los Angeles and were co-produced by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain.
According to Angry Ape, Corgan commented, "We have always regretted not recording more in between tours because albums have never caught the full story of the group...it's sort of Zeitgeist plus."

Well, I suppose it's time to bring everyone up to date on my recent Tiki- and Cocktail-related acquisitions. At the top of the page is the Trader Vic's Honi Honi mug that my buddette Kathryn [Link] scored for me at this year's San Francisco Tiki Crawl. The mug is adorned with mildly risque scenes of Polynesian islanders doin' the pre-Nasty, so we've dubbed it the Tiki Pr0n Mug. Thanks, K!
On the bottom left is an early Christmas present for me that just arrived from Reggae Treats [Link] in Jamaica: a bottle of Wray & Nephew's Berry Hill Pimento Liqueur. In case you didn't know, pimentos are not those red things they stuff in the middle of olives, they're Allspice berries, and Pimento liqueur is a essential ingredient in several classic cocktails such as Don the Beachcomber's Nui Nui, and the Trader Vic's Navy Grog. As a matter of fact, I'm enjoying a delicious, fattening (and drunkening) Nui Nui even as I'm typing this. It's even good straight up.
Finally, you can see the meager fruits of my scouring more than 25 thrift and antique stores in the Denver and Colorado Springs area last month: one measly Tiki oil lamp. It was a lot of work finding that baby, but I must say it does cast a nice, warm glow down in the Hai'deaway during these cold, Midwestern winter evenings.
Paul McCartney has teamed up with pop superstar Kylie Minogue for a duet that will air on British TV on New Year's Eve. The Australian singer joined the former Beatle as he performed hit song Dance Tonight on Thursday while filming annual holiday program Hootenanny,
We were first introduced to Danish electro-folk collective Efterklang when they reworked a Grizzly Bear track on the band's first remix EP Horn of Plenty: The Remixes. They've been on our radar ever since, and the DiS RCRD LBL blog seem to be as enamored as we are. They've just posted two Efterklang tracks for your downloading pleasure: "Him Poe Poe", which is a relaxing drone of strings and keyboards, and a Hulk remix of "Cutting Ice To Snow". Both tracks are sublime, recalling other Northern bands like Sigur Ros. Is there anything Scandinavians can't do?
1. Psychedelic Horseshit, Magic Flowers Droned (Siltbreeze) The most sincere record of the year. Despite its pasted-together ambiance, Magic Flowers Droned is a meticulously-crafted manifesto against the mundane, the disposable, and the transparent. Mr. Whitehurst is at once the most detail-oriented and haphazard person I know.
2. Panda Bear, Person Pitch (Paw Tracks) Beautiful and uplifting without overstatement, Noah Lennox has trumped every dream-pop or collage-work record over the last fifteen years, including his own band[base ']s best work, with Person Pitch. The most forward-looking album of 2007.
3. Blues Control, Puff (Woodsist) True postmodern psychedelia. Guitar, keys, some pedals and a Walkman are all this duo need to create a 21st Century Atlantis. It's like the bong is taking hits from you.
4. Justice - ÄY (Vice/Ed Banger) The Ed Banger hype finally culminates stateside with this French duo's debut. House grooves, hi-jacked funk, disco strings, a Devo video sample[sigma]this is a rare dance record that will stand the test of time.
5. Pink Reason - Cleaning the Mirror (Siltbreeze) Primal screams from Kevin DuBroux, the Midwest[base ']s finest post-hardcore singer/songwriter (don[base ']t call him that to his face). Rumors that he might end the PR book have me bummed. Stream:Pink Reason
6. Los Llamarada, The Exploding Now (S-S) Never-wave jams outta Monterrey, Mexico. This one climbed up my list as [OE]07 rolled along, its scuzzy vibes finally able to penetrate my dense skull.
7. Times New Viking - The Paisley Reich (Siltbreeze) I would probably put this in my top two or three if a) it were a tad longer, b) the drummer wasn[base ']t my brother and c) they didn't have the album of the year '08 coming out in a little more than a month. Still, a huge piece in the TNV puzzle and the most bang out of fifteen minutes ever.
8. Burial, Untrue (Hyperdub) As big a breakthrough for dubstep you'll see in the US, Burial takes a dated artform (minimal breaks) and somehow makes it vital again.
9. Shocking Pinks, Shocking Pinks (Astralwerks/DFA) Not quite your older brother's Kiwi Pop. DFA compiles the best from Nick Harte's two Flying Nun albums to make this domestic long-player. Love the live feel of these recordings. MP3:Second Hand Girl
10. Der TPK, Harmful Emotions (Siltbreeze) Read my full review of this here.
11. Sword Heaven, Entrance (Load) Read my donewaiting.com review of Entrancehere.
12. R. Kelly - Double Up (Jive) I wish Kels would serialize "Real Talk" like he did "Trapped in the Closet". And isn[base ']t it time he got his own reality show? MP3:Real Talk
13. The Field, From Here We Go Sublime (Kompakt) A human pulse for adderall-fueled robots. Warmth + repetition = ecstasy. MP3:Everyday
14. Sonic Chicken 4, Sonic Chicken 4 (In the Red) SC4 are a French group that play spirited garage in the VU/Kinks vein. Fun stuff, I'm really kicking myself for missing not one but two shows in Columbus this Fall. Link:Sonic Chicken 4 live on Cherry Blossom Clinic
15. Group Doueh, Guitar Music From the Western Sahara (Sublime Frequencies)Sublime Frequencies' first foray into new, album-length releases, Guitar Music showcases Doueh's virtuosic string talents. This is their first official release outside of Morocco and deserves a much wider edition than its 1000 copy, vinyl-only run. Link:About Dakhla, Morocco
ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - Ray Charles is back in his hometown. Albany unveiled a revolving, lighted bronze statue of Charles on Friday in the middle of a new downtown plaza that bears the R&B legend's name.
Cat on a Piano Cat on a Piano.. She appeared about a year ago in the garden, out of nowhere, just sitting there, looking, watching. A few months ago she got into the house somehow and stole food. A few weeks ago she came into the living room and watched telly with me, loudly purring. She now appears to be living and sleeping here. The little reddish-brown cat. The new cat. And my black cat hates her.

As the temperatures continue to get lower and lower, it is hard not to think about the warmer days ahead once we creep into summer. Those warm, sunny days also mark the beginning of the summer festival season, with one of the biggest being the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Next year's four-day extravaganza will take place June 12 through 15 on the same 700 acre farm on Manchester, TN.
Of course, it is too early to start speculating about the lineup, although we've already seen a few fictitious Coachella lineups floating around online. Stay tuned for more Bonnaroo updates, as their official site states that performers will start being announced in late January and early February.
Sometimes nothing beats a good old-fashioned pun, does it?
I've so enjoyed seeing Ben's many leaves in recent weeks, that I thought I'd contribute a few of my own. I don't own a book of Pantone chips, unfortunately, so you'll have to guess. These were all taken on a recent walk with my dog, Harry. Nothing beats winter sunlight.
I snapped this on the way out of our hotel room yesterday. I love forgotten old paperbacks like this, which always crop up on hotel bookshelves. (It was sitting next to the inevitable out-of-sequence Len Deighton, another hotel classic.)
In both its appearance and the writing within, this is pure trash. (I meant to scribble down a juicy quote to pass on, but time and children wait for no man.) Nevertheless, if you're anything like me (and anything like as old), it sparks a gentle little pang of nostalgia. It's the sort of book you find in your granny's house, or on those squeaky revolving racks in the Sue Ryder shop. They've become imbued with a sort of gentle, whimsical melancholy, and I can't help but love them, trash as they are. Perhaps I'll begin a collection.
(Stop Press: The internet, of course, has just robbed me of the charming sense of mystery around this book. A quick Google reveals that Wikipedia has everything you never wanted to know about Taylor Caldwell, and there's even an Appreciation Society. I'm trying to maintain my aforementioned gentle, whimsical melancholy, but it's not an emotion that easily survives an onslaught of cold, hard facts.)

It is always cool to see bands pushing the envelope a bit on their online music videos. The interactive clip for Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible" was mighty rad, and now Brooklyn's MGMT has offered up a choose your own adventure-style video for "Electric Feel." By downloading the Quicktime file, you can select the background on which the fellas get down. You can watch the video via Spinner, but to get your interactive on, download the file below.
Rap superstar 50 Cent spared no expense decorating his $18.5 million Connecticut estate - he spent $80,000 on a chandelier for a room he has never been in.
Coca-Cola, who was one of the charter advertisers when Facebook's controversial ad program Beacon was announced earlier this month, is taking a rain check for now, even after the social network modified its program yesterday. "We have adopted a bit of a 'wait and see' as far as what we are going to do with Beacon because we are not sure how consumers are going to respond," said Carol Kruse, Coke's VP of global interactive marketing, in an interview with NYT's Bits Blog. Kruse said she could see good uses of Beacon, if it is on consumers' terms.
Other advertisers include Comcast's Fandango, IAC/i's CollegeHumour.com, Blockbuster, (NYSE: BBI) Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and eBay. Would be interesting to see if anyone else follows suit..
