G.S. Guitar and Music
The 2009 Edition.

I'm rehabilitating an Alvarez acoustic guitar that a friend gave to me.  It now has a home and will sing again.  This year is coming to a close and many of us are now dreaming of the not-too-distant future.

G.S. Guitar and Music has infequent posts, but it doesn't take much to have the RSS subscription active in a newsreader for updates.  It also transfers data through to Soulcircuit.

Mediaburn gets more traffic of course.  There's something about its e-zine sensibility that I love.  The early web style reflects a time of incredible growth, freedom, expression and optimism on the internet.  Many of the digital era's promises have yet to be fulfilled.  Something great has been preserved in the Mediaburn.net DIY aesthetic. Is it the notion of "Promise?"

There will be a redesigned Mediaburn.net site down the road, but I think our scrappy design which heralded and brought widespread change will also continue to run on the web for a while.

What has been called "Web 2.0" in recent years brought us a little closer to the dream. We will have to travel onward because I'm not totally satisfied.  And yes, perhaps 2009 will actually have more "music" on this site, called, uh... G.S. Guitar and Music! Tongue out  It's been a long but very enjoyable road so far.  See you in '09.

A History of Aggressive Design Magazines.

"Graphic design evolved during the late nineteenth century from a sideline of the printing industry into an autonomous field with its own lore, icons and personalities. The missing link in this evolutionary process is trade magazines. Initially they established professional standards for printing, typesetting and bookbinding, yet viewed ornamental design as ephemeral. However, by the turn of the century, when businesses demanded printers provide more sophisticated layout and typography, trade magazine editors were forced to analyze and critique new advances. These magazines did not just reflexively report the current trends instead some aggressively codified key methods and mannerisms that in turn defined a profession."

Good Times with 'WHY?'
Alopecia.
Best Records Of 2008, #8 - WHY?
Alopecia
Release Date: 03.11.08

Before this year, I knew I liked WHY?, but I didn't realize I loved them. Not only did Alopecia get played on my iPod more times than any other, it spawned a retro-effect in which I began listening to and discovering I loved everything Yoni Wolf has ever done. If that doesn't deserve a #1 spot, I'm not sure what does. - Jenn Misko
