To Sony: Costly Silence

Bill R.: This does not give me any confidence in Sony. Appears decision makers at Sony just didn't get it when it came to implementing DRM. To them the CD's just represented media as usual, and the difficult balance (mentioned in an earlier post) between protecting their music and invading our computers was a minor point; a non-issue; unimportant. To Sony: big mistake folks. I'm very interested in how you move forward on this.

Great quote in here by respected security expert Bruce Schneier:

"Making digital files not copyable is like making water not wet," says Bruce Schneier, chief technology officer at security consulting firm Counterpane Internet Security. "You can't do it. DRM is a desperate attempt to cling to their old business model. They have to figure out how to make money in the new world."

Steve Hamm/Business Week: Sony BMG's Costly Silence.

Sony BMG's Costly Silence — The label was alerted to the secret, virus-vulnerable software on its CDs long before the scandal broke. Trouble is, it didn't act immediately to alert consumers — For Sony BMG Music Entertainment, it has become a public-relations nightmare — and it shows no signs of abating.
