Jabber and Radio

It was brought to my attention by Jarle Bergersen over at JDB Cyberspace that there has been work underfoot to integrate "Jabber" with Radio. I had absolutely no clue, but I guess it is not too much of a suprise considering DJ Adams uses Radio for his own blog. Check out RadioJabber and jerf.org for more. Now all I need to do is find a way to integrate Flash, Jabber and Radio all into one. Correction: DJ Adams does not use Radio for his blog. He uses Blosxom. Sorry for the mixup.

Taking a Ride on the RSS Bandwagon

For all you kids who have started using auto-discovery of RSS feeds, I went ahead and added the necessary links to make Eat Orange auto-discover enabled. (Actually, I just used the new Radio macro, but I'm trying to keep this on the d/l.) I do understand that this new-fangled technology is a great idea, but I just don't see what all the bru-ha-ha is about. Back in my day we just read the web sites we visited, keeping an eye out for the little XML logo so popular with the Radio blogs. Old-timers should note that the syndicate link above is always available.

Why is it Called Radio?

Radio Tweaking Day

I probably wasted too much time tweaking with my Radio Userland server today. On the positive side, I learned quite a bit about writing macros for Radio, most of which is rather conspicuously undocumented. The navigation system to the left uses Dave Winer's drawLeftLinks macro. This reads all the links from an OPML file and writes all the code. This is much better than the default navigatorLinks and allows easy update and categorizing using separate OPML files. In lieu of the Radio calendar (which I find rather restricting), I've started work on an archive system. Use the archive link to the left to try it out. The archive index is stored in an OPML file. The archive for each month is displayed using a custom macro that took me quite some time to learn and write. I'll clean this one up and post it in the near future. Maybe someone can improve the system further.
