JISP is another lightweight alternative to relational databases for persistence. In a nutshell, it's a giant hashtable of serialized objects on the file-system with indexes for (very) fast lookups.

Yes, relational databases are more powerful than these types of solutions but the complexities involved in deployment and mapping objects is often something I'd rather not spend my time dealing with.
