Newbery & Caldecott Winners Announced: The 2005 Newbery and Caldecott Medal Award winners were
announced at the ALA Midwinter Conference this month. This year's Newberry Medal goes to Kira-Kira written by Cynthia
Kadohata (Atheneum Books for Young Readers/Simon & Schuster) The Newbery
Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It has
been awarded annually since 1922 by the Association for Library Service to
Children, a division ALA, to the author of the most distinguished contribution
to American literature for children.
The 2005 Caldecott Medal goes to Kitten's First Full
Moon written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes (Greenwillow Books /
Harper Collins Publishers) The Caldecott
Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph
Caldecott. It, too, is awarded annually
by the ALSC, presented to
the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. This prestigious medal has been given since 1938. For a complete listing of all the Newbery and
Caldecott winners through the years, visit ALA’s website: http://www.ala.org

CE:
For those of you who missed last Friday's program on Dealing with Difficult People, below is information from BCR on how to access the program through a webcast:
Here is a URL to BCR's Web site where you will find Media Player
files that will take you to the "Soaring to Excellence: Dealing with
Difficult People" webcast:
YOU MUST RIGHT-CLICK ON THE FILE YOU WANT AND SAVE IT TO YOUR
DESKTOP!
Just clicking on the link on the page will not work.
These files were provided by the College of DuPage for
viewing last Friday's webcast. The .isdn file is the slower 100K
stream; the .lan version is the 300K stream.
BCR has a T1 line, and despite what I told people earlier,
the 100K stream is working better for me. I was told by DuPage that the
tech folks there think the problems people had with the slow,
stop-and-go viewing of Friday's webcast may have been firewall related.
BCR has a firewall, and the 100K stream is working. The 300K is stop
and go. Some firewalls limit the size of your bandwidth.

WEATHER:
We always
hope for good weather during the Summer Library workshops, however,
we have the following procedure in place
for inclement weather.
Mary Cameron will 'call' the workshop, due to weather, by 7:00 a.m. the morning of the workshop. If there is a raging blizzard, it could be
earlier. A message will be placed on the
answering machine of at the North Central Library Service Area. Participants are asked to call the toll free number: 1-800-392-8804 to
check the status of the workshop.
A
‘make-up’ ICN session will be held in several locations in the canceled
area, at the expense of the Summer
Library grant. If other libraries outside the area want to
participate in the ICN session, the individual participant would incur the cost
of the additional ICN site.
