ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The State Library of Iowa, working with the Iowa Educators Consortium (IEC) has again facilitated the preview and purchase of online
products.
Products can be ordered as early as March 1, 2005. Statewide
trials run from March 1 to April 15. All orders are sent directly
to the companies. For details, begin on the State Library web
site:
Links from this page provide a summary sheet listing
companies and products, trial site urls, pricing sheets and ordering
information. Companies request that the pricing information be password
protected. You will need the following to access the pricing. UserID:
Iowa and
Password: IEC. This is case sensitive. When you look at
the pricing pdfs, click the one relevant to your situation, i.e,
academic or public library. This password information can not be
posted on the web site, so keep this for your records. Be sure to take
advantage of the free trials
If you have problems downloading the trial or pricing
information, contact Judy Jones at the State Library. Contact the
individual vendors about specific product questions.
Applications are available for Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature -
Identity and Imagination, an initiative that will award grants to up to
200 public and academic libraries across the country. To obtain a grant
application and guidelines, please visit www.ala.org/publicprograms or
www.nextbook.org/ala.
Applications for the third grant round must be received by April 1,
2005.

Library 101 - March 22 - Manchester High School

Puppetry because it is fun, so possible and valuable
in education |

Description: Practical application of puppetry in
educational programming such as Toddler Time, Storytime, School Visits, and even
adult programming. Participants will receive: handout on values and uses of
puppetry; bibliography, simple patterns, time to turn a stuffed toy into a
puppet (Participants may bring a toy and sewing supplies or purchase the same at
a cost of $5.); ideas for telling alone and without a stage as well as ideas for
more complex uses; two all-inclusive simple production scripts especially useful
in public libraries where attendance is not mandatory; one extravaganza script
for 4 to 12 puppeteers; additional scripts tried and true in libraries and
schools; an opportunity to share ideas for use back at their own
workplaces. Date: Wednesday, April 6,
2005 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Contact Hours: 4 (toward public librarian
recertification) Place: Waverly Public Library, 1500 W. Bremer,
Waverly, IA Instructor: Patricia Coffie and Susan Reiher. Susan will
participate in presentations to show examples of team presentations. Both have
been presenting these ideas for application in Wartburg College Children’s
Literature courses for more than 10 years. Fee: $7 for handouts including scripts and refreshments if
participant brings own stuffed toy and sewing supplies: $12 if stuffed toy and
sewing supplies are provided. Must indicate which when

Workshop is 9 to 1:00 p.m. with a demonstration performance/talk to
Wartburg college students as the last part. There are two Wartburg classes, one
at 12 and another at 1:15. Participants are welcome to remain for the 1:15
repeat of the demonstrations.

We will also be presenting a Young Adult workshop
to accompany the YA manual on Thursday, March 10 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
This workshop will be held over the Iowa Communications Network at
multiple ICN sites across the state. Maria Levetzow, author of the YA
manual, will present this marvelous workshop. Two (2) hours of
continuing education will be available. Get ICN locations and register

Two positions on each LSA board expire June 30, 2005 -
public library employee and at-large. The person filling the
public library employee position is elected by public library
directors; the at-large position is a Commission appointment.
Anyone interested in running for election or being
considered for
appointment will need to complete a Nomination Form.
If they already
have a form on file here at the State Library, please ask
them to
complete a new form so that our information is
current. The form is on
the webpage below.
March 31, 2005 - Nomination Forms must be received at State
Library prepare ballots
April 15, 2005 - Mail ballots to public library directors in
each LSA
May 2, 2005 - Completed ballots must be received at State
Library
May, 2005 - Count ballots; prepare recommendations for
Commission
appointments (must consider gender and political party
balance)
June 6, 2005 - Commission certifies elections and appoints
at-large
board members
