ANNOUNCEMENTS:
NWILSA Blog:
With this blog, N.W. Iowa
Library Services presents a new approach to sharing news and commentary on
library management topics. It offers another way for library staff and trustees
to connect with each other by discussing service issues, policy issues,
programming ideas, and more.
This blog is an archived discussion
board for topics of interest to NW libraries. Post a question here and all
answers will be archived and available for future reference. Not sure you know
how to blog? Not to worry! If you can email, you can blog...
Now that
you've heard the news, why not take about 30 minutes in the next few days to
visit NWILS first ever BLOG! See how easy it is to post your own commentary and
questions. Just as fun to read commentary from your colleagues. .Go to http://nwilsblog.blogspot.com to view
the blog.
Register for PLM Courses This Fall: The fall round of Public Library Management
courses begins in August. Remember
standard #21, a Tier 1 requirement, requires that new library directors complete
PLM1 and PLM2 in order to be certified (see page 10 from IN SERVICE TO
IOWA…) PLM1 and PLM2 are
each 8-week courses. The first day of
class is always held in the Des
Moines area; thereafter, the
remaining 7 sessions are held over the ICN.
The fee for each course is $35.00.
This fall, PLM1 lands on
Thursdays beginning August 4th, with the first class in the Des Moines metro
area from 10:00—3:00 (specific location to be announced) The remaining classes will be held on August
11, 18, 25 (skipping September 1st) September 8, 15, 22, and 29 over
the ICN. ICN sessions run from
9:00—11:45. Note the registration deadline is fast
approaching: for PLM1, register online by June
24th. I’m
on tap to teach PLM1 this fall, so I hope to see some friendly
Northwest
Iowa faces in the
crowdJ For the link to
online registration and a look at the ICN locations, click
here: http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/continuing-ed/cecat.htm#August
PLM2 also lands on
Thursdays beginning August 25th, with the first class in the Des
Moines metro area from 10:00—3:00 (specific location to be announced) The remaining classes will be held on
September 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, October 6 and 13 over the ICN. Vicki Myron from Spencer P.L. is teaching
PLM2. The registration deadline for PLM2 is July
22nd. Not
to worry that these classes overlap, because new directors must take PLM1 first
anyway. The same link above will take
you to the online registration and ICN sites for PLM2. Be sure to call with any
questions! AND remember if you are a new director be sure to tell SLI on your application.
ABOUT THE
LSA:
THE SMARTEST CARD IS @ YOUR LIBRARY. GET IT. USE IT. SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY
CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American
Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a
library card is the most important school supply of all. Libraries offer books,
magazines, audio- and videotapes, computers, software and other multimedia
materials. And librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for
various ages and interests.
Studies show that children who are read to in the
home and who use the library perform better in school and are more
likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime
learning. Public library visits have more than
doubled in the past decade to more than 1.2 billion annually. The smartest card is @ your library. Get it. Use it. Now!
Downloadable artwork featuring "the smartest card" is available in multiple formats. To preview the art, please go to: www.ala.org/pla. To request
an electronic file for use in your publication, please call Elizabeth Morgan
at 312- 280-1546 or email emorgan@ala.org.
