New Friday Notes: notes for next week
ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Something to think about:
Heidelberg predicts that by 2010 printed media will only take up a 48 percent market share with the other 52 percent held by e-media.

ARTICLE: J. K. Rowling deserves the glory and wealth, for she dragged children back to reading from e-games and TV with her books. Movie copyrights and books have earned her 500 million pounds, put her among the only two writers on this year’s Fortune list, the other being Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code. However, such a victory alone cannot cover up the downturn of the publishing industry as a whole. http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/articleview/1562/1/110/

COPYRIGHT
"This week, at the urging of prominent legal scholars, academic-library organizations, technology companies such as Google and Microsoft, and many other interested parties, the U.S. Copyright Office is holding a series of hearings to determine whether copyright law should change to allow for more liberal use of orphan works."

Association of Rural and Small Libraries Conference  Sept 7 - 9 2005
The American Library Association (ALA), in collaboration with the Association of Rural and Small Libraries and the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services, will be launching a new advocacy campaign in 2006. The initiative is the result of the survey discussed at the last joint conference in 2004. It will focus on the value of small and rural libraries to their communities and will include new key messages and a toolkit for your use.

The project is part of @ your library®, The Campaign for America’s Libraries, ALA’s national, multi-year public awareness and advocacy campaign promoting the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century.

As part of the planning process, ALA staff will conduct a program during the 2005 joint conference on Wednesday, September 7 at 10:30 a.m., as well as three one-hour focus groups. Those focus groups will be held during the lunch hour on September 7, 8 and 9. Lunch will be provided. The purpose of the focus groups is to collect feedback on themes, issues and messaging for the new campaign.

Twelve participants are being sought for each focus group. On September 7 and 9, ALA would like to meet with rural library staff, including main library, branch and bookmobile managers, supervisors and staff.  The lunch meeting on Thursday, September 8 will be for library directors. Your input is invaluable to the planning efforts, so please consider joining.  If you are interested in participating in a focus group, please send an email to: olos@ala.org. Subject line should say: “Focus Group RSVP.” Responses will be taken on a first come-first served basis. Please include your name, title, library/bookmobile, phone number and email address. Closer to the conference, you will receive an email from ALA confirming your participation and the date, time and location of your focus group.

ABOUT THE LSA:

Q&A:
Question:
May an Open Access library charge for returning books to another Open Access library?
Answer: In my opinion;

According to Section 4D of the Open Access Terms of Agreement, the participant shall:

"Accept returned items from Open Access customers borrowed from another participating library; return items borrowed through Open Access to the owning library and indicate the return date. If an item is overdue, the library that owns the item processes it according to local policy. Any fines are collected by the library that owns the overdue item."

Computer Consulting Contract for Services  MEETING:

Aug 9 @ Tripoli @ 19:00 Meeting of interested parties.
