New Friday Notes: notes for next week

The life so short, the craft so long to learn.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

March 17, 2006  9:00 – 11:00 a.m.         Staying Connected Information Session over the ICN
For details and to register:  http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/cgi-bin/cecat/

April 28, 2006  If you think you might be interested, please complete and return the Letter of Intent to the State Library by April 28.  You may always change your mind later.

There is a better chance the State Library will be able to schedule training at a location convenient for you if you return the Letter of Intent by this date.

August 1, 2006 If you want to participate in this project, the State Library must receive a Letter of Intent by this date.  After this date, we may not be able to include your library in the project.

Gates Foundation “Staying Connected” Grant:  Last month, library directors and board presidents across Iowa received a letter and information packet from the State Library.  The packet alerted libraries to a new opportunity: local website and email hosting through SILO.  This new service is made possible through the State Library's “Staying Connected” grant funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The intent is to help Iowa libraries establish their own websites—or to improve upon existing websites—along with the ability to offer every staff member their own email address.  Through the web hosting service, a public library will be able to create and easily update its own website.  Web pages will be preloaded with a variety of local information specific to each community, including links to local catalogs, hours, staff members, and trustees.  Moreover, customers will have access to statewide resources like EBSCO and FirstSearch through their local library's website.

Through the email hosting service, a public library will be able to have consistent and stable email addresses regardless of the ISP.  In other words, should a library change ISPs, the library's email address will remain the same.  In addition, every staff member will  benefit from their own email address.

Again, the information packet mailed last month explained these new services in detail.  If the packet is missing in action, not to worry: this information is also found on the State Library's website:

http://www.silo.lib.ia.us//for-ia-libraries/Gates-Grants/gates-staying-connected.htm

Any interested library is asked to return a “Letter of Intent” to the State Library by April 28th.  The April deadline is really a “place holder,” giving State Library staff an early indication of how many Iowa libraries might be interested.  The real drop-dead deadline is August 1, after which your library may not be included in this project.  So please set aside some quality discussion time at upcoming board meetings to consider this opportunity and what it means for your library and your customers.  Call with questions or visit the State Library's website for details and documentation.  Thanks!

Independent Sector announces that the estimated value of a volunteer hour in 2005 is $18.04. This number, up from 2004's estimate of $17.55, gives charitable organizations a tool to help quantify the immense contributions volunteers make. http://www.independentsector.org/programs/research/volunteer_time.html

The 2006 ILA Leadership Institute deadline has been extended.  Applications will be accepted through March 20, 2006.  Details are available at:

I encourage all of you to consider applying to the 2006 Institute. This is an extremely high quality program at relatively low-cost to the participant.  We are trying to "grow leaders" in Iowa and ILA with assistance and support from the State Library is making this course a real bargain.

The opportunity only comes up every 2 years -- don't procrastinate, get your application in today!

ABOUT THE LSA:

In case you missed it on the Consortia Blog
SLI just received its phone bill from the ICN.  On the bill is a USAC 10% fee.  When I called ICN, they said they were billing the universal fee to recoup what they have to pay into the federal universal service fund.  Just like the phone company on your personal phone bill at home.
