New
Friday Notes: notes for
next week
The life so short,
the craft so long to learn.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Important Reminder: Sign up for the “PLOW Project:” In light of the State Library’s new and
improved website, this article from the March 6th EYE-OPENER bears
repeating. Since then, what we called the “Staying Connected” project has a new
name: it’s now referred to as PLOW, which stands for
“Putting Libraries on the Web.” PLOW presents an
exciting new opportunity: local website and email hosting through SILO. This
new service is made possible through a grant awarded to the State Library by the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The
intent is to help Iowa libraries establish their own websites—or to improve
upon existing websites—along with the ability to offer every staff member their
own email address. Through the web hosting service, a public library will be
able to create and easily update its own website. Web pages will be preloaded
with a variety of local information specific to each community, including links
to local catalogs, hours, staff members, and trustees. Moreover, customers will
have access to statewide resources like EBSCO and FirstSearch through their
local library’s website.
Through the email hosting service, a public library will
be able to have consistent and stable email addresses regardless of the ISP. In
other words, should a library change ISPs, the library’s email address will
remain the same. In addition, every staff member will benefit from their own
email address.
To
date, 157 libraries statewide have expressed interest. Any interested library is asked to return a “Letter of Intent” to
the State Library by April 28th. The April
deadline is really a “place holder,” giving State Library staff an early
indication of how many Iowa libraries might be interested. The real drop-dead
deadline is August 1, after which your library may not be included in this
project. So please set aside some quality discussion time at upcoming board
meetings to consider this opportunity and what it means for your library and
your customers. Call with questions or visit the State Library’s website for
details and documentation: http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/archive/2006/04/plow

Will we all be switching to ebooks? [The Guardian]
"The (Soni) Reader, which made its full debut at the CES show in Las Vegas
earlier this year, is an impressive little gadget. Around the size of a thin
paperback book, it mimics the printed page using electronic ink and has a crisp
display that puts no extra strain on the eyes. With the capacity to hold
hundreds of titles simultaneously - as well as being able to download new titles
from the internet - some are saying it might do for publishing what the iPod has
done for music."

I have received some very important information about how to recognize a stroke that I wanted to share with you. . A
neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke. He said the trick was
getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient
within 3 hours which is tough.
Sometimes symptoms of a
stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness
spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people
nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e "It is
sunny out today"). If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks,
call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
