New York Times story - "A study of college students seeking psychological counseling has found that their emotional difficulties are far more complex and more severe than those seen in the past. From 1989 to 2001, the percentage of students treated for depression doubled. So did the percentage of suicidal students, according to the study, conducted at the counseling center at Kansas State University. More than twice the percentage of students were taking some type of psychiatric medication, even though the absolute number of students seen by the center remained stable." Poor mental health widespread in young (UK)
BBC on a new Department of Health survey which indicated that "Serious mental health problems are far more common among young people than has previously been recognised.... New research shows more than a third of young people know someone who has attempted suicide. And a quarter are worried about the mental health of a young person they know."
Mental Health Agencies Unite (Ohio)
Cincinnati Post story - "CRI and Queen City Case Management, two of Cincinnati's largest mental health agencies, have announced plans to merge by July 2004. The combined agency will have more than 300 staff members and will serve more than 3,500 adults with severe mental illness."
Nebraska's only private mental-health hospital to close
Story at The Independent - "The state's only private hospital devoted exclusively to mental health care will close April 1, leaving little more than 100 beds for inpatient care in a five-county area of eastern Nebraska. The closing of the Richard Young Center after 72 years was announced Thursday. It had required subsidies from Methodist Health System and state Health and Human Services to stay open."

Mental health residential facility opens (Minnesota)
Anoka County Union story - "A new four-bed, short-term residential crisis stabilization facility for adults with mental health problems opened last month in Anoka County."
Web site provides mental health resources to students
Story at CNN on Ulifeline.org, a new mental health resource for colleges and troubled students that is now being offered by thirty colleges and universities. One part of the site is open to any student anywhere - an anonymous screening program developed at Duke University that tests for different emotional issues including suicide, depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug problems.
Romney reverses mental care cut (Massachusetts)
