Lawsuit Alleges Civil Rights Violations in Cook County Jail; Complaint Says Inmates with Mental Illnesses Face
Ascribe Newswire story at the NAMI site - "Disability rights advocates today filed a class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court on behalf of individuals with mental illness who are incarcerated by the Cook County Department of Corrections awaiting trial on pending criminal charges." The story notes, too, that more information is available at the Bazelon Center's web site.
Opinions vary on how to fix Child Protective Services (Arizona)
Arizona Republic story a gathering of 200 people ("mostly foster parents, CPS caseworkers, police, lawyers, mental health professionals and other child advocates") at one of the open sessions held by Gov. Janet Napolitano to solicit suggestions on how to reform the state's child welfare system.
OHSU sees spike in uninsured emergency visits (Oregon)
KATU-2 story - "The number of uninsured patients making emergency visits to OHSU Hospital has increased since cuts to the Oregon Health Plan took effect this spring. Results from the OHSU pilot study, released Friday, found a 17 percent increase in emergency visits by uninsured patients this spring, compared with a year earlier. Researchers aren't sure how much of the increase is due to job layoffs and how much to recent cutbacks in the Health Plan." The story notes, too, that " on March 1, about 100,000 Health Plan members lost coverage of outpatient mental health, dental care and addiction treatment."
Better training called for to subdue frenzied patients (Canada)
