No-brainer / A House move to hobble mental health
Editorial in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune - "Today the House Ways and Means Committee will have a chance to atone for a wrong. The panel meets this afternoon to consider the Omnibus Health and Human Services Finance Bill, which is packed with mental-health provisions about which citizens haven't been allowed to testify. Slipped in as amendments by the HHS Committee chairman, Rep. Fran Bradley, R-Rochester, these stealth moves would reverse recent steps toward building a sound system of mental-health care in Minnesota."
Fairview-University adds to mental health unit (Minnesota)
Brief item at The Business Journal of Minneapolis/St. Paul - "Fairview-University Medical Center in Minneapolis is adding a 16-bed inpatient unit for adult patients with acute mental illness. ... The new unit, which will open Wednesday, is being added at a time when Minnesota faces a severe shortage of hospital beds for mental health patients."
Mental Health Workers Protest Proposed Budget Cuts (Missouri)
KMBC-TV story - "Dozens of mental health and parole workers from across Missouri chanted and carried signs Tuesday, saying lawmakers should not balance the budget on the backs of state workers and the people they serve. The Department of Mental Health stands to lose $23.1 million under a budget proposal being considered by the state Senate. And Gov. Bob Holden said Monday that the cuts would eliminate treatment and residential services for more than 3,000 mentally ill adults and about 480 emotionally disturbed children."
Solano may cut mental health programs in face of budget troubles (California)
Napa News story - "Solano County programs aimed at keeping the mentally ill out of jail may be cut next year as the county grapples with mounting financial troubles. State budget cuts may force the sheriff's department to abandon its mental health court, a residential treatment facility and a community treatment program."![]()
