Why the FBI needs more powers ... NOT
Salon has a story out, The dragnet comes up empty, pointing out that:
In the aftermath of Sept. 11, law enforcement agents detained more than 1,000 people, mostly Middle Eastern-born men. Some were held for weeks without an attorney. Some were virtually convicted in the press. But none have been implicated in terrorism.
I don't think that our intelligence failures can be blamed on our police not having enough power -- I think that they can be blamed on -- lack of intelligence.
