MOVIE - ANALYZE THAT - $$$$ (OUT OF 10)
STARRING - Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal, Lisa Kudrow, Cathy Moriarty-Gentile, Brian Rogalski, Reg Rogers, Thomas Rosales Jr. & Joe Viterelli.
DIRECTOR/CO-WRITER - Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, Analyze This).
The follow-up, to the 1999 hit movie "Analyze This", follows the exploits of Paul Vitti (DeNiro) after his release from prison. Of course, he is still in need of analysis from his friend Dr. Sobel (Crystal).
The charm of the first movie was that it was a refreshing and truly funny take on mob life. Analyze That, suffers the fate of most sequels, in that it has to work harder to get laughs because the premise is no longer fresh or unique.
There are some truly funny moments in Analyze That but not enough of them. In fact, some of the funniest moments come during the out-takes at the end of the film. A lot of the rest of the mildly humorous moments have an edge to them that is borderline mean-spirited and definitely not of the knee-slapping variety.
The actual plot, Vitti trying unsuccessfully to go legit, is formalistic and uninspired. The best that can be said is that the film doesn't drag on too long as it is approximately 90 minutes.
To paraphrase Sigmund Freud, sometimes a movie is just a movie and sometimes its a rental. Analyze That is the latter.
