MOVIE - LEGALLY BLONDE 2: Red, White & Blonde - Review Rating $$$$$ $ (OUT OF 10)

STARRING - Reese Witherspoon (Elle Woods), Sally Field (Rep. Rudd), Bob Newhart (Sidney Post), Luke Wilson (Emmett Richmond), Charles Dance (John Bosload) & Regina King (Grace).

DIRECTOR - Charles Herman-Wurmfeld (Kissing Jessica Stein, Fanci's Persuasion)

Elle returns, in the sequel to Legally Blonde, to take on Washington and get a National Animal Rights Bill passed by Congress.

Legally Blonde 2 succeeds, to a certain degree, because it doesn't try to be something its not. Its not as fresh or funny as the original but retains an internal consistency that exploits all the built-in humorous potential of its characters.

There are some very funny scenes in Legally Blonde 2 and the generally young crowd I watched the movie with laughed heartily in all the right spots. They also appeared to totally buy into Elle's Barbie Doll feminism. Depending on your perspective this could be either a good or bad thing. The rest of the story does lag at various times throughout the film.

You know you're watching a sequel, though, when Bruiser, Elle's dog, steals most of the scenes he appears in (Bruiser comes out of the closet in this episode). This is the surest sign that the concept is running out of steam. Unfortunately, there is already talk of a Legally Blonde 3 and a midseason ABC television sitcom. Everyone concerned will be better off if the producers have a change of heart.

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde is a sequel that will appeal to its intended audience. If your not female and a teenager you might want to consider going to another movie instead.

Running time - 95 minutes
