MOVIE - THE PRINCE & ME - Review Rating $$$$$ $ (OUT OF 10)

STARRING - Julia Stiles (Paige), Luke Mably (Prince Edvard), Ben Miller (Soren), James Fox (King Haraald), Miranda Richardson (Queen Rosalind), Alberta Watson (Amy) & Zachary Knighton (John).

DIRECTOR - Martha Coolidge (Real Genius, Out to Sea, Rambling Rose, Lost in Yonkers, Valley Girl)

The Prince & Me is an updated version of the very familiar girl meets Prince Charming story. Being romantically linked, to a modern Prince, necessitates the addition of Paparazzi and the script is smart enough to include this element in the story. Our heroine is also the epitome of the modern career-orientated woman.

The modernization of the story is mere set dressing as opposed to a deeper contemplation of the complexities of such a relationship. The Prince & Me has no aspirations to be more than what it is, a lighthearted romantic comedy. In this regard, it largely succeeds because of the inclusion of enough charming and mildly humourous moments to keep the viewer entertained.

What The Prince & Me doesn't succeed at is making you truly convinced that Cupid's arrow has struck gold. The attraction between Paige (Stiles) and Prince Edvard (Malby) is based on the attraction of opposites. Beyond that basic concept the viewer is left somewhat mystified as to how they fall so deeply in love. Paige is not a woman so easily distracted and the Prince's transition from playboy to devoted husband happens to quickly to be believable. A lack of on-screen chemistry between Stiles and Malby doesn't help matters either.

Judged by romantic comedy standards The Prince & Me is not a crown jewel but it will do when your in the mood for non-thought provoking entertainment.

Running time - 111 minutes
