The most difficult hurdle films like Hotel Rwanda face is authentically conveying the full scope of the tradegy being recounted. Hotel Rwanda brings this deplorable genocide to life without undue sentimentality or in your face guilt. The facts, for the most part, are allowed to speak for themselves.
Hotel Rwanda, in a similar vien to Schindler's List, tackles the tricky subject of the competing values of self-preservation and altruism when faced with unspeakable evil. Heroic efforts, more often than not, are originally motivated by selfishness. This impetus has multiple outcomes depending on the nature of the person these forces are applied to. The good join the forces of Light and lesser individuals become Storm Troopers for the forces of Darkness. The history of the world indicates, sadly, that there are more Storm Troopers than Knights in Shining Armour.
Hotel Rwanda demonstrates the difference one person can make. Just think how different the outcome would have been, for untold thousands, if only a few more people and/or nations had lifted a finger to help.
Running Time - 110 minutes
