MOVIE - AUSTIN POWERS in GOLDMEMBER - Review Rating $$$$$ $$$1/2 (OUT OF 10)

STARRING - MIKE MYERS, MICHAEL CAINE, BEYONCE KNOWLES, FRED SAVAGE, MINDY STERLING, VERNE TROYER, ROBERT WAGNER & MICHAEL YORK.

This is the third, and reported final installment, of the adventures of Austin Powers. The original was a marginal box office success and the sequel was a mega blockbuster. You can watch, and enjoy, the third installment without having seen the first two. Fans of the previous films might find this one somewhat repetitive though I can't say for sure not having seen them myself.

The opening sequence, which I won't give away as usual, is worth the price of admission alone. It's so well done I was afraid that the rest of the movie wouldn't be able to sustain either the quality or the humour of the opening 5 minutes. Fortunately, Myers keeps the jokes and the energy level high, for the remaining 85 minutes or so. The length of the movie is another example of his comic timing. Myers knows when enough of a good thing is enough.

The humour is so juvenile, campy and over the top that instead of being repulsed the viewer revels in its audacity. Myers is spoofing is own spoof and succeeds admirably. This is a classic "B" film, unlike Eight Legged Freaks, executed with "A" film finesse.

The beautiful Beyonce Knowles is the latest Austin Girl and does an excellent job. It is actually harder than it may seem to act convincingly in such a corny film. Fred Savage, of what happened to you after The Wonder Years, does a credible if not as charming job here too.

As has apparently been the case with the prior movies, in this trilogy, there are numerous cameos by famous actors that add to the fun being had. There are also out-takes in the final credits worth sticking around for.

Austin Powers is the rare sequel to a sequel worth seeing, Yeah Baby.
