Movie: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Date: 1974 Category: Horror Director: Tobe Hooper Big Stars: Marilyn Burns, Allen Danzinger, Gunnar Hansen |
Tobe Hooper's bizarre cult classic isn't as gory as you might think, but it is a horror classic. Sally (Burns) and her friends pick up a dorky hitchhiker (Edwin Neal) who turns out to be a lot weirder than they were ready for. Their encounter with him quickly leads to a grisly meeting with the rest of his deranged family, including the masked Leatherface (Hansen). Hooper takes his time building suspense and atmosphere in the first half, beginning with a gruesome self-mutilation. Most of the actual killings are not explicit by today's standard, but there is fear in Sally. The truly disturbing part is Sally's torture and the familiy's interactions with the outisde world and with each other. In a strange way, Chainsaw is a story about family, a very psychotic family, but family anyway. Hooper says Chainsaw is very loosely based on Ed Gein, a real-life cannibal and killer captured in Wisconsin in the 1950's. |
