Talking to people ... who aren't in the audience

I used to help people with their computers -- "end user support". I recently gave a talk on home networking security, and the biggest problem I had was the realization that no one who needed the information was likely to be in the audience at a campus security conference. So I altered my topic to "How to help someone else with their home computer's security", which made it much clearer for me.

My slides from the talk will be at the Badger Incident Response Team site soon.

One inspiration for this talk was Phil Agre's essay How to Help Someone Use a Computer. Phil Agre runs the Red Rock Eater Digest, a email and web-based set of links, primarily on current events and on the social aspects of computer use.   Permanent Link
