Accessibility

The New York Times has an editorial piece on web accessibility, which is a good explanation of why a client's website will be a better website if they make it accessible.

Meanwhile Connecticut has begun requiring many of their IT consultants to take web site accessibility training. You can't put off learning about this any longer. As J. Michael Straczynski once said The avalanche has begun. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.   Permanent Link

"We also walk dogs..."

Robert Heinlein's "We Also Walk Dogs..." is a short story about a company that is in the business of solving people's problems. The story has a lot of cool Buck Rogers stuff in it like anti-gravity, but we're reminded that the business they're in is not "cool stuff", it's fixing their client's problems, including walking the dog if that's what's needed.

I love consulting in part because there are very few limits in what I can do. Yesterday, a client said "You're probably a Monty Python fan. I need a clip showing a specific skit" and asked me to help run it down. Fifteen minutes at home and I'd run down the skit she wanted in "Monty Python: All the Words". That was the dog this client needed walked, and I was able to walk it. I'd hate a job that was defined by what I was not allowed to do.   Permanent Link
