"First the sentence, then the trial" ... Congressman tries to legalize Hollywood hacking

Great. Do-it-yourself justice for Hollywood. The court system requires you to prove your case before exacting your penalty; apparently the congressman is unacquainted with the concept.

Lawmaker: Let studios hack P2P networks. A California congressman is preparing a bill that would protect copyright owners, allowing them to use high-tech techniques to stop file traders. [CNET News.com]

Nominee: Best Take on a Business Scandal in a Newspaper

The $3 billion accounting scandal at Worldcom was in all the papers this morning. My favorite take on it was this one, from USA Today columnist Kevin Maney:

I see that Bernie Ebbers is no longer CEO of WorldCom. That's too bad. There just aren't enough physical education majors from obscure Southern schools at the top levels of business today. Long before Bernie became a telecom mogul, he got his B.A. in PE from Mississippi College.

If he'd been able to make WorldCom into a great company, he'd have become a folk hero. Ambitious high school students would've dropped their plans for Harvard and Stanford to study PE, knowing it would be an express ticket to wealth, power and the cover of Fortune. Business authors would've filled best-seller lists with titles such as The Phys Ed Way: Gym Teacher Tactics for Building Strong Companies. Sample advice: Make poor-performing employees run laps.
