And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time

This morning, one of our directors passed around the William Safire "On Language"column on the word "blog" at a meeting. I've been talking up blogs at work, as knowledge management tools and as one way to reduce the bigness problem we have.

Some people have the idea click more easily than others. My own workgroup, for example, has been filing "contact reports" via a web frontend and a homebrew mail-to-the-database system backend, Regular browsing of the database is how we track each other's work: most of the time we're out of our offices on campus somewhere, and may only see each other once or twice a week. The difference between this and a shared blog is mostly one of format.

Similarly, managers who've fought the monthly battle of getting a meaningful status report report out frequently tell their staff to "write it out daily", which sounds a lot like keeping your blog up to date.   Permanent Link
