The
Titan Arum started blooming at 3 PM today. If last year's bloom is any guide, you will be able to get a whiff of it just by going anywhere in Birge Hall, without standing in line.
Standing in line for the greenhouse is a better experience than most line-standing; they keep the line moving and the docents from the Botany department have a well-practiced explanation of what's going on.
A recommended experience if you live in Madison; now that both of the Titan Arums at UW have bloomed, it may be years before you can do this again.
Researchers stick computers in all kinds of places they were not designed for, and are always looking for ways to extend cables beyond what the cable standard supports (see the
Titan Arum Webcam for a setup that is partially housed in a greenhouse that is maintained at tropical heat and humidity). Now there's a device that can extend USB out to 100 feet, and supports remote soft power-on for Macintoshes.
