Baen Books does the right thing

Baen Books is publishing a new David Weber SF novel which includes a CD ROM containing the texts of the previous ten novels and three anthologies in this (very commercially successful) series, together with what is described as "nine novels by friends", which I assume means fan fiction.

This is somewhat surprising. The amazing thing is the format the files are in: RTF, HTML, and MS Word .doc files. Unencrypted.Ready for you to print, read, markup, alter, download to your favorite handheld device, whatever.

All content files remain functional after they have been moved to your hard drive. Enjoy.

TiVo does the right thing

I basically watch all TV via time-shifting; first with a VCR, and now with a digital video recorder (a TiVo; Replay TV is the alternative many friends like). Up till now, the Nielsen ratings don't include data from people like me; only shows watched by those who don't use technology count, and we end up with another season full of so-called Reality shows, while calling a show "intelligent" remains the kiss of death. The first step in changing this has occured:

[Via David Wertheimer's Ideapad] Nielsen, TiVo to share viewer data

Nielsen Media Research and TiVo have agreed to measure viewing habits through the collection of TiVo recording data. This is huge: For the first time, when viewers record shows to watch later, their viewing will be counted in the total audience.
