John M. Ford's "110 Stories"

John M. Ford has released his poem about September 11th. I'd read about this a while back; I've been waiting eagerly ever since, especially since I'd recently reread From the End of the Twentieth Century and had been reminded of what a good poet he is, as well as an SF novelist.

Patrick Nielsen-Hayden was kind enough to host it when the original page started getting too many hits, and I've switched this link to point there.

I won't quote it here: go and read it: 110 Stories.   Permanent Link

Lucy and I finally went to see Minority Report with our friend Sarah this weekend.

One minor plot detail fascinated me. The designer drug of choice seems to be something called "Narrow In", and while they don't really describe it, it seems likely that what it does is let you focus in on exactly one experience, or memory, while excluding everything else. You could, for example, keep reliving

The addictive potential of such a drug is really obvious, and scary. I know enough computer people already who can focus on things to the detriment of their own well being. Dorothea Salo's essay Intensity touches on this trait.   Permanent Link
