Call it democracy

The New Jersey Supreme Court, all of whose members were appointed by Republican governors, has ruled that the citizens of New Jersey will actually be allowed to have a choice of candidates on their ballot, and have let the Democratic Party appoint a new candidate to replace Torricelli, who withdrew from the election. Predictably, the Republican candidate feels that this is wrong (it's so much fairer to the voters to only have a Republican candidate on the ballot).

The state Republican Party chairman: "If Democrats have their way and are allowed to change candidates in the middle of the election, what would stop any party, at any level of office, to replace their candidate at any point in the campaign?"

One can only repeat the words of Joseph Welch to another Republican hero, Senator Joseph McCarthy: "Have you no shred of decency, Sir? Have you no shame?"
