Last week, I got some news that I had to sit on for a few days, as it affected others as well as me.
I have a new job, and my old workgroup has gone away.
This is part of an ongoing process of rebuilding the division from the way we were structured in the early 1990s. I won't try to explain the changes; it'd be tedious to anyone but an insider. The short version is that I liked my old job but it was time to move on. If you don't like change, IT's a poor choice of professions.
I'm now part of our networking group, working with our security folks as well as working on other issues; there are a lot of projects in my new group, and it'll take some time for things to shake out. I used to have a little card in my wallet, a gift from a friend, that said "The biggest danger in communication is assuming that it has taken place." A big part of my old job and my new one is sticking with a process until that communication has happened. Just sending someone an email doesn't mean anything.
An immediate change is that I've just finished attending the Fall Internet2 Member Meeting in Los Angeles this week, and an immediate bonus is that I'm heading up to San Francisco tonight and see what Halloween is like in a town where people like to dress up oddly year round.
