Mike Meuser on the post 911 erosion of public information on industrial emissions and toxic chemicals.

Corporate accountability comes by way of public disclosure.

The argument of course is to keep "all that information" out of the hands of potential terrorists. But as with the Patriot Act (and the equally troubling Patriot Act II), we may well be giving up more than we're protecting.

Because industry and regulators have dropped the ball, it is especially important that communities know as much as possible about the risks they face so that they can take informed steps to pressure industry to do the right thing and reduce the risks at the local level.
