I finally tracked down the source, and direct quote, of this striking statement that I've been approximately quoting from Dupont CFO Gary Pfeiffer:
During the decade of the 1990s, we improved our environmental footprint
by about 60 percent and shareholder value increased by nearly 340
percent. I will not try to convince you of the mathematical causality
of those two facts. I would suggest for your consideration that they
are more than coincidental.
There's the gauntlett for anyone who continues to dismiss environment
performance as an 'unafffordable cost' -- as so many otherwise well
informed executives unfortunately continue to do.
First job of any businessperson, as one of my advisors once told me, is
to be sure you're not leaving money on the table. To which I'd add:
don't pour money down the drain either.
