> activeRenderer 1.0 beta 8 Release Notes

A little later than I'd wish, beta 8 of activeRenderer is out. [read more] [s l a m]
> BlogBack: Random Tidbits Revisited

Once again, feedback on different random stuff from the past.  A lot of it this time from readers.  Thanks everyone.  Credits on everything (I hope, if not let me know).

  • Gimp on the Mac?  Yup -- www.macgimp.com sells an installable CD, ready to run for $29.95.  (The fee is really for the installation, not the software).  Very cool.  Haven't tried it but cool.  $19.95 for students.  Thanks John.
  • Looking to avoid ATM fees?  If you are eligible then look at: http://www.usaa.com/.  Basically it is for people in the military or ex-military but has a lot of benefits and is recommended (again, thanks John).
  •  The answer to my "when will I learn that small, light, cool computers aren't necessarily reliable?" -- You won't have to learn that if you buy and iBook ;)  After three months, I've rebooted three times, and haven't had a single problem, not even an application crash, and no system crashes.  I love it. (Yup, you guessed it John again, he was a busy reader, thanks Man!).  Paolo also told me that is iBook / TiBook had a period of 42 days of uptime.  42 days!.  It really looks like I'm so going this direction as soon as I can just cost justify it (maybe if I "accidentally" dropped my Thinkpad on the floor, Gretchen will approve the purchase.).
  • From Rob Jorgensen (it's long but as he sent it):

Subject: BBEdit Discount

Hi Scott :-)

Regarding your thoughts on BBEdit (no flames - I promise!)...

If you visit the BBEdit Upgrade page, you'll find the following info (near the bottom of the page):

"BBEdit Lite users (any version)

Individuals who use BBEdit Lite may cross-upgrade to the current version of BBEdit for the cross-upgrade price of $79.00 (US) plus shipping and handling. Cross-upgrade orders may be placed via any of the methods listed at the top of this page. Please be ready to provide the creation date and version number of your copy of BBEdit Lite when placing your order."

In essence, you can obtain the full version of BBEdit for $79.00 if you are willing to jump through a couple of hoops. BBEdit rocks and is well worth the extra effort. It is highly scriptable (via AppleScript), which makes it very easy to automate tasks which are normally performed manually on a repeated basis.

Welcome to the world of Macintosh! Regarding Mac software, there has never been a better time to be a Mac user. There is more software available now than ever before, with new applications released almost daily. :-)

Best regards,

Rob

> AppleScript 1.8.3 manual updates, release notes and bug reports

The release notes and manual updaters for AppleScript 1.8.3 (OS 9 and OS X) are now available. This message, sent to various AppleScript mailing lists, has all of the relevant URLs as well as notes on issues which have been brought to the attention of Apple since the update was released. In particular, Apple requests that OS X users who experience a crash in the installer while installing AppleScript 1.8.3 send an email with the contents of the Console's Installer Crash Dump and a recent Apple System Profiler report for your system. An email address for these bug reports is included in the message. [AppleScript Info]
