P3P, Platform for Privacy Preferences, a specification from the W3C is emerging as an industry standard. It is a new standard for implementing online privacy. The P3PToolbox is an especially good website that will help you get informed about this emerging technology. There is a video of the implementation guide (an event held in Washington, D.C.); part 1 features opening remarks about FTC's privacy policy (regarding consumer information) and P3P implementation by Joe Rubin, US Chamber of Commerce, J. Howard Beales III, FTC Director of the Consumer Protection Bureau, Shane Ham of the Progressive Policy Institute, and Ari Schwartz of the Center for Democracy and Technology; part 2 discusses P3P implementation (how to make your website compliant with P3P, etc.). Incidentally, IE 6.0 is a web browser that can be used by consumers to set their privacy policies (as per P3P).
