That cough...

Every parent remembers the first time they heard that cough -- the "croup". A horrible, goose-like or seal-like honking/barking noise coming from their little child. It's been years since I've heard it (thankfully!). But that all ended last night.

At around 3:00am this morning, I awoke to here some movement upstairs and the bathroom light went on. One of the kids was probably up. Then I heard that cough. I sprung out of bed so fast -- especially for 3:00am! My oldest (5 1/2 years) sounded like an angry goose. She didn't have a temperature, but she did have our 3-year old in tow. We got some cough medicine in and sat down and relaxed for a few minutes to calm everyone down.

Around 3:15, I took our 3-yeard old back to bed -- assuring her that her older sister was close behind. I then pulled out the cool-mist vaporizer and filled it up to help my 5-year old sleep tonight. By 3:20 she was back in bed and the vaporizer was humming away.

About 3:22 my 3-year starts calling for me. She doesn't like the noise and wants to sleep in my bed. My wife had been sleeping on the recliner anyway since she couldn't get comfortable so I went up and brought my 3-year in bed with me. My wife took my daughters bed (it's got a new, firm mattress). I thought I could finally get back to sleep.

At 3:27, my 3-year decides she wants to be upstairs with her sister. I pleaded with her to try and go back to sleep, but to no avail. I reminded her about the noise -- she didn't listen. We're on our way back upstairs to boot my wife out of bed.

That lasted all of about 10 minutes... She's out of bed complaining about the noise. So I tried the sofa-bed in another room. She seemed excited about that idea. We took her favorite pillow and favorite bear and got her all tucked in.

Ten minutes later, she was up again. Didn't like her new accomodations. My wife was now back on the recliner and we convinced my 3-year to hop up in mommy's lap. She finally got comfortable and fell asleep.

I got back into bed around 4:02am and wondered how much sleep I would get before my alarm goes off at 5:30am.
