Online Oil and Gas Assessment Info

Uintah Basin oil drillingThe US Geological Survey has updated its assessment of oil and gas in the Uintah Basin of Utah and Colorado as well as four other Rocky Mountain basins.  The overall result is that there is less oil available in the area than was estimated in 1995.  Online Assessment information is available in the current edition of ArcUser Online.  ESRI has some information on using GIS for basin modeling and petroleum exploration.

One of the features of the Utah Oil and Gas Information Center is a system that allows users to search oil, gas, and UIC data.

Special Session

Today is the 6th Special Session for the 2002 Legislature called by executive order.  The Executive Appropriations Committee will meet at 9 am this morning to revue revenue estimates and make assignments for cutting about $117 million from the state budget.  This is never a pleasant exercise, but even less so when they have to do it under such a difficult time frame.  The result will probably be a compromise between the Governor's proposal which consists of delays in road and construction projects, elimination or reduction of water subsidies, and cuts to some agencies.  He has remained firm in supporting NO cuts to education.  The Legislature's proposal is something closer to an across-the-board 3.5% cut.

Here's a bond bill that will generate $36 million.  Executive Appropriations is now proposing something closer to 4.2% for most agencies.

The Doug Wright show on KSL radio is doing a poll on what approach to take with respect to the cuts: specific line item cuts or across the board cuts like the legislature wants.  The line item choice is winning 63% to 37%.  They're right!  Listen to what the Governor has to say at 11:15.

12:15 PM - Here is the supplemental appropriations act as it currently stands.
