ITS techicians analyze network router problem
One of the worst things that can happen to an IT person is for the network to go down.  ITS has just recovered from a major outage to one of our core routers, something that should not happen.

In brief, a failed power supply took down one of our two "redundant" core routers.  In the aftermath, I have (re)learned several things:

  1. Things are not always as they appear
  2. We have some excellent, dedicated state employees
  3. We must do a better job in ensuring that plans become reality
  4. The network is perhaps the most important service ITS supports
  5. Large networks become extremely complex
  6. Skills and knowledge must be shared

I pulled together a team this morning to review the outage that occured over the weekend (this afternoon's outage was a repeat performance.  We identified a number of key issues that must be resolved in order to have a more reduntant, failsafe network.  Individuals have been charged with fixing these shortcomings.  I will be responsible to make sure that we follow through with these issues.
