n a ceremony at the state Capitol Wednesday, Gov. Olene Walker signed ceremonial copies of two pieces of legislation designed to recognize the military.
"Today we demonstrate Utah’s commitment to freedom, as well as our commitment to those who protect it on the front lines," Walker said. "Our state has long been recognized for the valor and commitment of its military personnel, and this resolution and bill both validate our appreciation of that stellar record."
The governor signed a ceremonial copy of House Concurrent Resolution 15 (H.C.R. 15), Resolution Recognizing Military Appreciation Week, which designates June 12-19, 2004 as Utah Military Appreciation Week. The general description to the resolution states that the week "recognizes the contributions of the United States Military and its members to the state of Utah and its citizens." Rep. Stuart Adams sponsored the resolution in the House, and Sen. Dave Thomas was the Senate sponsor.
In addition, Walker signed a ceremonial copy of House Bill 265 (H.B. 265), Designation of Commemorative Days, which sets aside specific days to recognize the service of Utah men and women in the military. The bill designates the third Monday in May as Yellow Ribbon Day and the third Friday in September as POW/MIA Recognition Day. Rep. Don Bush was the House sponsor of the bill, and Sen. Gene Davis sponsored the bill in the Senate.
Invitations to the ceremony were sent to military officials and personnel, as well as state and local government leaders. Military leaders were recognized, and each was presented with a copy of the resolution. The 23rd Army Band Brass Quintet provided prelude music for the event.
