Clay Shirky:
"The RIAA Succeeds Where the Cypherpunks Failed. In response to the RIAA's suits, users who want to share music files are adopting tools like WINW and BadBlue, that allow them to create encrypted spaces where they can share files and converse with one another. As a result, all their communications in these spaces, even messages with no more commercial content than "BRITN3Y SUX!!!1!" are hidden from prying eyes." [via Tomalak's Realm]
Sharing is still going to happen, just like bootlegging, copying of tapes, recording a tv show onto VHS or DVD. The RIAA just wants to make sure that everyone doesn't do it.
It all comes down to ease of use.
Napster made it easy. Morpheus made it easy. Kazaa is easy. If a software developer can create an enjoyable experience, the software will proliferate. Unfortunately, things like Clarke's Freenet and other "geekier" projects that make it harder to nail down the traders and copiers are more difficult to use.
However, the day will come.
