Do It Yourself: Voice over IP A very popular subject lately: Voice over IP and setting up personal telcos. Digium makes hardware that connects personal telcos and PBX's to analog land-lines.  They've also founded and funded the open source GNU / Linux based Asterisk PBX iaxclient for the iax (asterisk protocol) iptel.org has an open source SIP router (works with just about everything from softphones, hardware phones to windows messenger) Xten provides sip phone software - it is currently bring rebranded for vonage and others.  There is a free version available.
