Another World Wide Panorama
Another edition of the World Wide Panorama project was released on New Years Day, January 1, 2005. This is a collaborative effort by 186 photographers from 38 countries, each contributing one VR panorama. These remarkable computer images allow a 360¡ view, letting you look in any direction, including straight up and down.
The theme for this event was "Sanctuary", a term allowing for many interpretations (see the home page).
The participants show us sanctuaries as diverse as the tops of tall buildings, a farmhouse kitchen, snowy forest scenes and cozy cafes. There are great cathedrals and simple roadside shrines, a chapel in a cave, temples, mosques, monasteries, memorials, and cemeteries. Also libraries, artists' studios, urban parks, greenhouses, and a hermit's cave.
We see wildlife refuges, shelters for birds, cats and pigs, a park readied for disaster, a protesters' encampment, temporary housing for the homeless, a man living under a freeway overpass, and a Maserati showroom. The scale runs from a child's crib, to a miniature Nativity scene, to the Eiffel Tower, and an all encompassing view of the earth from over the Indian Ocean.
All continents (except Antarctica) are represented, and 27 American states. Seven photographers in the Middle East jointly present their panoramas of Dubai, Lebanon, Israel, and Egypt in the name of peace. Participants include professional photographers, artists, computer experts, senior citizens and students. Biographies of many of the participants are on the site.
