Film Panoramas: "Much of the recent upsurge of interest in panoramic photography has come from the ease with which panoramas can be make using a digital camera. However you don't need a digital camera to make pans, and - as with most areas of photography - there are still some advantages in working with film."

Curves (and Other Goodies) for Photoshop Elements: "Those of you who use Adobe Photoshop Elements may have noticed that I didn't talk much about your chosen image editing program last week when discussing Curves. The simple explanation for this of course is that Adobe doesn't provide support for Curves in Elements. Not even in the new Photoshop Elements 3.0. Well, let's not let a silly little thing like that get in our way. Presented herewith are two easy ways to get access to curves in Elements...."

Another World Wide Panorama

Another edition of the World Wide Panorama project was released on New Years Day, January 1, 2005. This is a collaborative effort by 186 photographers from 38 countries, each contributing one VR panorama. These remarkable computer images allow a 360¡ view, letting you look in any direction, including straight up and down.

The theme for this event was "Sanctuary", a term allowing for many interpretations (see the home page).

The participants show us sanctuaries as diverse as the tops of tall buildings, a farmhouse kitchen, snowy forest scenes and cozy cafes. There are great cathedrals and simple roadside shrines, a chapel in a cave, temples, mosques, monasteries, memorials, and cemeteries. Also libraries, artists' studios, urban parks, greenhouses, and a hermit's cave.

We see wildlife refuges, shelters for birds, cats and pigs, a park readied for disaster, a protesters' encampment, temporary housing for the homeless, a man living under a freeway overpass, and a Maserati showroom. The scale runs from a child's crib, to a miniature Nativity scene, to the Eiffel Tower, and an all encompassing view of the earth from over the Indian Ocean.

All continents (except Antarctica) are represented, and 27 American states. Seven photographers in the Middle East jointly present their panoramas of Dubai, Lebanon, Israel, and Egypt in the name of peace. Participants include professional photographers, artists, computer experts, senior citizens and students. Biographies of many of the participants are on the site.

Visit the World Wide Panorama at "worldwidepanorama.com". In addition to "Sanctuary" there are three previous events still on line, an amazing archive of over 600 VR panoramas spanning the globe.

The World Wide Panorama is sponsored by the Geography Computing Facility, University of California Berkeley. All images are copyright by the original photographers, please obtain permission before using them in any way.

For further information contact the organizers: G. Donald Bain (dbain@berkeley.edu) and Landis Bennett (landis@360geographics.com) or any of the participants (e-mail addresses are on the site).

Purpose
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
