Before You Write

An old friend of mine quoted from somewhere (I don't know):

Before you sit down and write, stand up and live.

Last November, I spent my Thanksgiving with an Irish girl named Dervala.  She was in Southeast Asia making her way around the world.  The fact that she's a good writer is beside the point - her experiences catapult her stories from mundane to captivating, especially in a world filled with so many boring blogs.

I just caught up with Dervala and she is in Canada.  After Asia she went down to South America and travelled through Mexico, Peru and Bolivia (amongst others I'm sure).  If you want some good travel writing for free, check her out.

Not So Softly or No Longer A Muggle

Okay, my homework was deferred while I finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.  Occasionally a fad comes along and I resist it, not for nonconformity's sake but just out of disinterest.  Initially I wasn't too interested in Harry Potter even when K kept imploring me to read it.  Thanks Norbert!  Anyway, I closed the book last night and was very pleasantly surprised.

There are millions of Harry Potter reviews online, I'm sure, so I'll just say that J.K. Rowling is worth it just for the names she fills the book with: Neville Longbottom, Dedalus Diggles, Hagrid... the list goes on.

I now have two agenda items: watching the film and listening to the audio version.  This story must be amazing when read aloud by a good storyteller.
