Fargo
If you'd asked me in college, I would have told you that my destiny lay north. It would stop briefly in San Francisco and Portland but eventually find its rest in Redmond. It was so mythic a place.
It's difficult to find empathy for the surprises of life in the Dakotas because life here is so solid. It crawls along methodically and gives you what you expect. Even the inconsistent weather is consistently inconsistent. That breath of variance in otherwise unchanging expectations. It seems so strange after being here that I once woke up each day in Nairobi never expecting or affecting that circumstance. I once walked in downtown Honolulu at 3am. I once watched fireworks over a lake in Zürich. It was never something I orchestrated, it was life happening to me.
This weekend, I'm going to Fargo. North but just a smatter to the East. I'll add to that list of never expected waking up in a motel in Valley City for a Saturday in Fargo with K. Amongst other things we'll be headed to the North Dakota Museum of Art where they have a really interesting exhibit of photography from Buenos Aires.
G sent me an email on seeing. I'm practicing...
