Fargo, vol II: Sails
I like flying into Denver. I now do it regularly on my way back to Los Angeles from Brookings. In particular I like the roof – a series of what look like white sails that launch from the top of the main buildings.
K and I were on our way to a museum when I saw a set of sails launching from the tiny chamber of commerce building. Making the connection was excitement enough – K kept laughing at my asking if she’d seen Denver International Airport over and over.
It’s funny how things pop out in the midst of what conventional wisdom tells us is nowhere. I don’t know who is behind this silent nod towards Denver but the delight of an Easter egg like that must have been part of the intent. We navigated by sight to the building, a small affair but not to be missed with the massive sails dwarfing it in the air.
I love obscure references. I suppose a gigantic sail above a building is not obscure. Shall we call it a reserved reference? Reserved for that few that will get it in the oblivion of all the passers by. It's like a guitar riff you recognize or a line from a book that makes an instant connection to something you held previously near and dear.
One way took look at the building in Fargo would be to consider the roof dishonest - it seems much more out of proportion than the DIA version of the roof sails. The way I experienced it was a reference. A nod to something else out there, something bigger.
