Collectors

It seems human to collect. Some people collect stuffed animals, others collect stamps. Orwell wrote of stamp collectors:

Stamp-collectors are a strange, silent, fish-like breed, of all ages, but only of the male sex;

And there do seem to be gender specific leanings when it comes to collecting. Baseball cards and barbies, high performance vehicles and antiques – nothing can be stated as a rule but the generalization does exist.

Some people collect pure data; they memorize statistics about sports, political information, and other "collectable" information to impress friends with.

It is always annoying to me when a person comments of another's collection, "Must have a lot of time."  One man's trash is another one's treasure. The person who collects one thing snickering at the one who collects another seems rather foolish to me.

So if it is human to collect and we all practice it, what does our choice of what to collect say about us as individuals?

Why not collect phone books? (Pictures here)
