Advice for Al
... and anyone else who is young enough for this to matter.
I noticed an editorial on the MSN Careers website with the "Top 10 Jobs for Grads" as the teaser. I took the bait and read on, finding that among the "top 10" jobs are private and public accountant.
Accounting (Private) - $44,564 Management Trainee - $35,811 Teaching - $29,733 Consulting - $49,781 Sales - $37,130 Accounting (Public) - $41,039 Financial/Treasury Analysis - $45,596 Software Design and Development - $53,729 Design/Construction Engineering - $47,058 Registered Nurse - $38,775
It's precisely this type of nonsense that lured me into wasting my undergraduate education studying accounting. A few weeks ago I was talking to an aquaintaince here who had just recently hung her hat up from a job doing audit work for a public accounting firm. Her decision to leave was more recent and she asked me whether or not I regretted quitting the accounting world.
That question made me beam because in my life, a littany of mistakes, poor judgements, missed opportunities, and painful blunders, where not a day goes by that I can't find something tapping me on the shoulder with regret, I always happily look back at my last day in the accounting firm, photocopying and binding reports.
Al, find something you love to do, make it an obsession, and pursue it.
