2005: In Posts
And what a year it's been. There is no aspect of my life hasn't been touched by change. I moved from California, my home of more than a decade, and started the year homeless. I went from being single to being married. I quit my job of more than seven years. I turned 30.
The year's destinations were Portland (Maine), San Antonio, Boston, and Minneapolis. Portland, Maine stole my heart. I had to fight back tears when I saw MIT for the first time.
Many people encouraged me to write about growing up in Africa. Here are the year's Africa posts:
Africa is Fiction Connecting mercenaries, England's reknowned school Eton, Prime Ministers, and African dictators
Beggars of Dignity Understanding the bravery of desperation, being unemployed
Haunted Nairobi A story from Nairobi's Elgeyo Marakwet road
Nairobi's Little Prince A small boy in a Nairobi arcade
Some of the more interesting people and points in the year:
I Go To Bowdoin My encounter with some students of the elite university in Maine.
Literacy Meeting Ismael, a Mexican migrant worker on my way to San Antonio
Sporting Archetypes Watching kids play soccer and thinking how we are defined so well, so young
Turning 30 Brief thoughts and a realization
I always try to write book reviews. Although I don't always choose to write a formal review, here are the books I read and mentioned during the year:
The Kingdom by the Sea The Next Christendom (guest entry from a friend) Understanding Comics Jude the Obscure (no review written) The Love of Stones Heart of Darkness Rain Fall O Pioneers! Berlin The Quiet American
Programming posts:
I discovered July 22 (22/7) was PI approximation day and wrote about it and a tool I made for getting as many digits (up to 100,000) of PI that you want. I also redesigned my homepage online. I started and stopped and started doing technical posts on another blog, Metadeveloper. You can find references to more technical stuff there.
Thanks for stopping by. Thank you, everyone who commented. Thank you, each of you that took the time to email me with encouragement or to share a bit of yourselves. I can't physically be there to shout the countdown to 2006 with you but hopefully the web can put a digital fragment of David into your heart. We're all in this together.
