Women in Science and Engineering

Philip Greenspun just posted a funny, insightful essay about the dearth of women in technical fields. His basic premise is that women are smart enough to recognize how unrewarding such a carreer might be.

A good read, I'd recommend it whether you agree with him or not.

One of my nieces seems to have the curious, puzzle solver, determined mindset that makes us all think she may make a good engineer or scientist. Our mind's eye isn't that of a struggling academic, it's more thoughts of her as a person who builds massive bridges, or designs vehicle suspension systems, or comes up with ways to fight diseases in a lab somewhere, analyzing genetic sequences. Or, maybe like her uncle, she'll write software.

No matter what I hope she isn't content with an easy, mediocre life for herself.  No matter what she does, I hope she's happy. My wish for her is irrespective of gender.

On10.net vs KEXP

KEXP, one of my favorite stations to listen to online just got a treatment from On10.net. Check it out.

If you're still listening to commercial radio, it's time to free your mind.
