Pandora, Vocal Harmony
Some time ago I raved about Pandora - an online jukebox, pointing out that one of the most interesting things about it was that music selection was based on a recipe that broke down music into a sort of descriptive set of attributes from which similar things could be selected. This is quite different from what most people are used to: the human disc jockey, who plays "taste" and a limited catalog of memory into their decisions. The DJ model is cool - my favorites have introduced me to some good music along the way - but it's nice to use Pandora now and then to discover new music or make connections in music you've always liked.
I just discovered Pandora has a podcast which delves into musicology of their jukebox. This episode covers vocal harmony and how they break it into different styles: unison, tutti, call and response, and counterpoint. It is very interesting stuff if you're willing to think of music outside cultural, perceptual, and stylistic bounds.
